Hastings and Macleay schools take part in Koala Smart

About 12 schools have signed up to a program designed to promote koala preservation and protection.

The Tacking Point Lions Club program, Koala Smart, is open to all schools in the Hastings and Macleay.

Tacking Point Lions Club's Janice McGilchrist said the program aimed to inspire, educate and motivate.

Students will address the question of what they would do to save the koala with a focus on the issues which threaten their local koala population.

They will research, analyse, problem solve, think creatively and build links with the community.

Each participating school will receive a half-metre tall koala sculpture to paint.

The program will culminate in a travelling public exhibition towards the end of the year.

St Columba Anglican School primary school teacher Ann-Kathrin Kiehn said if we didn't do something now, there would not be koalas in our region in our lifetime.

"We have koalas in our environment here and we are very concerned about their welfare," she said.

Lake Cathie Public School assistant principal Karin Haleblian said the students really got behind environmental projects, especially with koalas being a recognisable animal in our area.

Mrs Haleblian said the creative aspects of the project, with the mini-koala sculpture painting and the creative thinking around problem solving, also appealed.

Wauchope Public School class teacher Mitchell Nicholson the school's involvement in the program was a way of making a community connection which hopefully had meaning for the students.

"I'm looking at making it as collaborative and inclusive as possible," he said.

Schools have until April 12 to get on board with the educational and creative arts program.

Tacking Point Lions Club has partnered with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, NSW Save Our Species Program, Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail in the step towards saving koalas from extinction.

The club launched the program in January 2019.

ALF - National Bushfire Appeal - Update - January 2020

    7 January 2020

Since the last Newsflash issued in November 2019 we have seen the fire situation across Australia increase into catastrophic proportions. All States have been impacted in some way over this extended period with the current situation as at end of December seeing major fires still burning in NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Many are still out of control and we are seeing new areas impacted daily. This situation is not going away in the short term and we are still only early in the summer season.

Since the National Appeal was established we have received donations from Clubs, businesses and private individuals totalling over $600,000 and we have already disbursed grants to impacted Districts in Queensland ($85K), New South Wales ($160K) and South Australia ($69K) totalling overall to date $312,000.

With the most recent devastation throughout the South Coast of New South Wales through to areas of East Gippsland in Victoria, more than 500 properties have been lost impacting whole communities. The needs for these areas are significant and support of Lions through the Australian Lions Foundation will recovery assistance to be given. Sadly, a number of lives have been lost including those of Volunteer Fire fighters who have been on the front line fighting these fires. Our thoughts are with all families impacted at this sad time.

We ask that all Clubs please consider their support for those in our communities who have lost everything.

Club donations can be made direct to the Foundation as detailed below, but please let all your communities know what Lions are doing and if they wish to donate direct they can do so by using the “GiveNow link” button on the Multiple District Website and the Australian Lions Foundation Website. All public donations received over $2 are tax deductible. Please consider supporting this appeal to help those in need.

We thank the many clubs who have already donated and this will go directly to assist via the local clubs and their District support mechanisms.
